OD, DN or Inches? How PPR Pipe Sizing Actually Works

PPR pipe outer diameter vs nominal bore vs inch sizing explained

Three different sizing systems collide on a typical bill of materials, and mixing them is the #1 cause of ordering the wrong PPR diameter. Before you look at a single number in the size chart, it pays to be clear on which number you are reading:

  • OD (Outer Diameter, mm), the standard for PPR. A “25mm PPR pipe” means 25mm across the outside. Pipe, fittings and heat-fusion sockets all reference the same OD, which is why the welding machine’s heating socket, the pipe and the coupler snap together without adapters.
  • DN (Nominal Diameter / bore), used by many steel and PVC systems. DN is a name, not a measured value, and it does not equal PPR’s OD. A drawing calling for “DN20” is not automatically a 20mm PPR pipe, DN roughly tracks the internal bore of steel pipe, so DN20 steel is closer to a 25–26mm PPR OD in practice.
  • Inches, trade shorthand (1/2″, 3/4″, 1″). Convenient, but approximate, always confirm against the mm OD before you order. This is also where PPR differs from consumer systems: PEX, PVC and copper are each dimensioned differently, so an inch label carried over from one of those does not map cleanly onto PPR.

The rule for PPR is simple and worth pinning to the wall of any sourcing desk: match by outer diameter in millimetres first, then translate to inch or DN for the paperwork, never the other way around. Get the OD right and the fittings, valves and welding sockets follow automatically. Get it wrong and an entire container of pipe can arrive one size out of step with the fittings that were ordered against an inch label.

Why does PPR use OD at all? Because polypropylene random copolymer pipe is pressure-rated by wall thickness against a fixed outer diameter. The extruder holds the OD constant and varies the wall to hit the PN class, so the OD is the one dimension that never moves for a given size, it is the natural anchor for the whole system. OD × Wall Thickness: Every Structure, Every PN, in mm

This is the table most size guides never publish, actual outer-diameter × wall-thickness figures for all three Bekaatherm PPR structures, in both PN20 and PN25. Read it as OD × wall (for example, 25 × 3.5 means 25mm outer diameter with a 3.5mm wall). At the same OD, PN25 always carries a thicker wall than PN20; the aluminium-composite structure runs a slightly different wall because the aluminium layer shares the pressure duty.

A few things fall straight out of the numbers:

  • The wall grows with the diameter. Plain PPR PN20 climbs from a 2.8mm wall at 20mm to an 8.6mm wall at 63mm, the bigger the pipe, the more material it carries to hold the same 20-bar class.
  • PN25 is a clear step up. At 63mm the wall jumps from 8.6mm (PN20) to 10.5mm (PN25). That extra ~2mm of wall is what lets PN25 take higher pressure and temperature, at the cost of a smaller bore and slightly heavier pipe.
  • Aluminium composite runs leaner at PN20. A 63mm PPR-AL-PPR PN20 wall is 7.0mm versus 8.6mm for plain PPR, because the embedded aluminium layer shares the hoop stress, useful when weight and thermal expansion matter.
  • Wall thickness drives container weight. For importers, these millimetres decide how many metres fit in a container by weight, a point worth pairing with our FOB & container-loading guide before you commit to a purchase order.

Wall Thickness & PN: Same OD Doesn’t Mean Same Pipe

Two PPR pipes can share the same outer diameter and still be very different pipes. PN (Pressure Nominal) rates the working pressure, and for the same OD a higher PN means a thicker wall and a smaller bore. Bekaatherm PPR is produced in PN20 and PN25:

The takeaway for sizing: the OD tells you what fittings and welding sockets match; the PN tells you the wall thickness and how much pressure and heat the pipe will take. You need both before you order. The rated pressure also falls as temperature rises, a pipe rated 20 bar cold carries far less continuously at 70°C, which is exactly why heating and hot-water circuits so often step up to PN25 or to a composite structure. Which PPR Size Do You Actually Need?

How to choose PPR pipe diameter by flow, fixture count and run length

Diameter follows flow. Undersize and you get pressure drop and noise; oversize and you waste material and container space. As a practical field guide:

  • 20 mm (~1/2″), single-fixture branches, short hot/cold runs, the last drop to a tap or shower.
  • 25 mm (~3/4″), the workhorse for apartment risers and multi-fixture supply; the fastest-moving size in most markets.
  • 32 mm (~1″), main branches feeding several 25mm lines, manifolds and heating headers.
  • 40–50 mm (~1-1/4″ to 1-1/2″), distribution mains and building risers serving multiple floors.
  • 63 mm (~2″), primary mains and commercial/industrial systems where flow volume rules.

Two variables beyond flow decide the final spec. Temperature: for heating and solar-thermal work, many specifiers step up to PN25 and to fiberglass- or aluminum-composite PPR for lower thermal expansion, a 4-metre plain-PPR run can move several millimetres between cold fill and hot service, while a composite run barely shifts. Distribution model: importers stocking a market usually carry a full 20/25/32 spread as fast-movers, then 40/50/63 to depth for projects, the size chart is also a stocking plan.
